Subrata Roy, the visionary founder of Sahara India Pariwar, was a distinguished Indian businessman. Born on June 10, 1948, in Araria, he initiated his entrepreneurial journey in Gorakhpur after studying at Holy Child Institute, Kolkata, and Government Technical Institute, Gorakhpur. Joining Sahara Finance in 1976, he transformed it into the colossal conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar by 1978.

Guiding Sahara to become India’s largest conglomerate with over 5,000 establishments and a workforce of 1.2 million, Roy diversified its interests into finance, education, real estate, media, entertainment, tourism, healthcare, and hospitality. His international ventures included acquiring Grosvenor House Hotel in London (2010) and Plaza Hotel in New York City (2012). In 2019, he expanded into the automobile sector with ‘Sahara Evols,’ offering electric vehicles.

However, Roy faced legal challenges related to the Sahara India Pariwar investor fraud case, leading to his detention in 2014. Despite these setbacks, he continued contributing to humanitarian efforts, aiding Uttarakhand in 2013 and supporting Kargil War martyrs’ families.

Throughout his illustrious career, Roy earned accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of East London (2013), Business Icon of the Year (2011), ITA – TV Icon of the Year (2007), and the Global Leadership Award (2004). Consistently featured in India Today’s list of 50 Most Powerful People of India since 2003, he held the tenth-most influential businessman title in 2012.

Sadly, Subrata Roy passed away on November 14, 2023, at the age of 75, succumbing to cardiorespiratory arrest and complications from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes. May he rest in peace.
